New Poem Series Poem #8

1983 – 1986

there was a friend I had
when I was little and
everything in her house
was different than mine

in their apartment
on a concrete slab
so the floors didn't
echo when you walked

her parents smoked
rarely opened the blinds
put ketchup on their eggs
left the tv on all day

another family was
full of kids who yelled at
each other all the time
slammed doors sulked

a third with even more
children who seemed
to be acting the parts
of a happy family on tv

and me wide-eyed
completely fascinated
at these different lives
each its own planet
