Yet Another Installment in the Long-Running Poem Saga About the Winter of 2006

January 27, 2006
There is a book

that just appeared on a shelf at work
within the last few days
The Columbia History of the World
published by Harper and Row

A largish hardcover
in a gray jacket
with yellow type on the spine
(a lovely color combination)

and every time I walk by
the shelf where it now sits
and see it there
it makes me pause and notice momentarily

because the typefaces used are the same
as those on the paperback copy of
Fowler’s Modern English Usage
that sits at home on the shelf in my mother’s house

That book is also gray
but with orange lettering
presumably from the same line by the same publisher
and there is something deeply affecting to me about the synchronicity
