When I came back from lunch today
the lobby of my office building was decorated for Christmas
twinkle lights
garlands over the elevators
fruit-punch-red poinsettias in pots
But the question is
was it like that
before I went to lunch?
I do not know
It turns out I’ve got no recollection whatsoever
of walking through that lobby on my way out to lunch
without a doubt I must have done so
but apparently my mind was entirely elsewhere
I don’t so much self-recriminate about this
as simply wonder in astonishment
