The Principles of Uncertainty

This is one of my all-time favorite art books: The Principles of Uncertainty by Maira Kalman. It's hard to know what to say, really, about a book or a body or work that you respond to on a visceral level. To say that it's a sort of an illustrated memoir, with twelve chapters about Kalman's thoughts and doings each month for a year, or that it was originally a blog on the New York Times site, or to try and describe the colorful dreamy quirky wonderfulness of her painting style, all seem woefully inadequate. Maybe suffice it to say that, like any book or work of art that resonates for one personally, every time I look at it it makes me think: "Yes. This is it. This is how things are. She gets it."
